POLICE in Holsworthy said there is no excuse for drink or drug driving, following the launch of Devon and Cornwall Police’s summer drink drive campaign at the start of the month.

Drivers are being reminded that the consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs can be devastating.

Throughout the operation, drivers can expect to be tested if they are involved in a collision or if stopped for an offence. Routine stop checks will also result in drivers being tested. This includes the use of roadside drug swipe detection devices as appropriate.

People convicted of drink or drug driving can expect to be banned from driving for at least 12 months, receive a fine up to £5,000 and/or six months in prison. When someone dies as a result of a collision involving a driver under the influence, sentences can carry a penalty of up to ten years in prison.

A spokesperson for Holsworthy Police said: “Results from the 2016 summer drink and drug driving campaign suggest that if you offend in Devon and Cornwall you’re twice as likely to get caught compared to the national average. The message is clear: there is no excuse for driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.”
