RHYS Bishop had a much more dramatic journey home from work than normal last week.
The father of two was on his motorbike on the way back home to Camelford from his job as a chef at Port Gaverne Hotel when something went through the front of his helmet, causing a 7mm round hole (pictured).
Thankfully as the roads were quiet, Rhys had the chance to compose himself before getting home as quickly as he could to his partner Shannon and his children.
However, Rhys believes that the damage was caused by an air rifle and is warning fellow road users to be aware at all times.
Rhys said: “I’d just turned right at the crossroads by Camelford Station when coming from Delabole when something hit me square in the face. At first I thought it was a rock from the side of the road but when I pulled over I realised that it couldn’t have been something flying up off the road as it was a clean 7mm hole which is the same size as an air rifle. I was pretty shook up by it all but thankfully I was only a couple of miles from home so I got on the bike and whizzed home as quickly as possible.
“Thankfully there weren’t really cars on the road as it was around 10pm, but if there were it could have been a lot worse. It was probably just children or people playing around in a field with the air rifles but it’s dangerous and shouldn’t be allowed.”
Once back at home, Rhys rang the police, adding: “The police weren’t very helpful at all as they said they couldn’t do anything about it. They said they think there’s a 90% chance that it was something which flew off the road. But there’s no chance of that happening. If it was a stone it would have been an angled crack but it was a clean hole.
“Unfortunately now I’m going to have to go and buy a new helmet and they’re not cheap but thankfully I’m fine. However, it shows that anything can happen and that you should always be prepared when you’re on the road.”
A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said: “Police were notified around 11pm after reports from a member of the public who was riding his motorbike from Delabole to Camelford advising he has a dent in his helmet. Local officers were advised, and advised that this could have possibly been caused by something coming up from the road and hitting it.”
