Thank you for putting my letter in the paper last week. I was not going to write again but the reply given by Cornwall Council annoyed me into writing one last time.
The lady who wrote on behalf of the council was in the 'Marketing and Communication' section. I'm afraid I'm not up on all these grand names. Would I be right in saying her job is to tell us all about the new council? If that is right, I'm sure she earns her money explaining things like why the new council has wasted so much money on their silly badge.
I just think it would be a very nice change if there was someone in charge of listening to what we want rather than telling us what we're going to get.
She said the library was the best place for the service the new council wants to give the Bude people. That's very true. A small desk in the library is fine for handing over forms and passing out telephone numbers. What the new council can't or won't understand is that the service we have now is so much better than that.
Why didn't they take the time to see the service Bude has had for twenty years or more before deciding it didn't fit in with their plans? Why didn't they ask the customers what we valued about the little office in the Crescent?
It's got nothing to do with being convenient in the car park. Most of us older ones don't drive! What we value is that it's private, not standing in the open library. We value paying our bills to a person, not feeding money into some machine. We value seeing the same person every time, not taking potluck as to who is standing at the library counter. The lady in the Crescent knows us and knows our case. We are able to get good help and advice every day.
That's what the people who use the office in the Crescent value. It really is not about the building the service is in but the good service itself. A service we have had in Bude for years.
I still have the same two questions I asked last time. 1 — Why is this service being taken away from the Bude people and not from Launceston or the other towns? 2 — What is the new council going to do with the office in the Crescent car park?
I'm not going to write again. I just hope someone takes this up and really looks into it. You might say, "I don't use the office in the Crescent so why should I be bothered?" I say, the office is there for everyone but it is the older people and the poor people who use it most and you should be bothered for us. I would also say if they take the Crescent office away and no one makes a fuss what service will be next. Don't let them see Bude people as a soft touch.
Bude.
