North Petherwin Football Club continued their club house fundraising with a dog show on Sunday. Despite the poor weather prediction, 60 people and 25 dogs arrived, including some all the way from Holsworthy, to take part in the fun classes.

The village always support things well and with the planned club house needing funding, they helped raise £420.

Ramona Willett, a neighbour of Pat Orridge who organised the annual dog show, stepped in to run the BBQ and helped by Nick Heywood the First Team’s manager. They and Jenny Barriball and Kay Symons selling teas, kept everyone well fed.

Carol Whibley, Susan Jameison, Francis Gubbins, Margaret Tilby and Victoria Gasson manned the stalls, raffle and 50/50 draw Glebe Veterinary Surgery once again sponsored the rosettes and all were grateful to them.

Pat, club fundraiser and vice chairman, said: “It all helps the club enourmously when such generosity is shown.”

For the second year, everyone was encouraged and kept informed of classes taking place by the raffle prize caller, Andy Sleeman who is also the Football Club Secretary. There was a small agility course set up by Gus Tathborn who trains with Chloe Brown and thanks were expressed to Kay Allen, an obedience trainer, for the loan of jumps. Gus is only 15, and despite being nervous, gave lots of encouragement to all taking part and even made the treats/recipe cards and information leaflets on agility classes. Barney and his owner Barry Rowling won the Best Veteran Class, with Carrie and her dog Reg winning not only Most Handsome and Best Crossbreed, but then swept the board by winning the Championship title.

Carrie also very kindly did the registrations to help after a very last minute illness prevented the usual person from attending. The very generous prize voucher for this was donated by Bows and Whistles along with several raffle prizes and Reserve Champion received a voucher for an hour’s use of Field of Dreams.

Being a football club event, why would they not have a judge for a class called ‘Referees Rules’ — Phil Volz who is a regular referee, is also a very important part of Devon and Cornwall Sending Love to Ukraine and he and Jill regularly collect donations of much needed items and Phil drives them over to Poland near the Ukraine border so that they can be distributed. On several occasions, they have been able to bring eligible refugees back with them.

There was also a Parish Pick Class judged by Parish Councillor David Greathead and the remainder of the classes were shared by Martin Allison and Guy Morlock. Martin has judged at every village show since 2017 and Guy joined last year.

Pat added: “Thank you to everyone who helped, took part and generally made it a great day. The club look forward to future events in the dry with the club house build scheduled to start in a matter of weeks.”
