FROM toilet seats to broken glass bottles — a Launceston-based nursery is continuing its battle against 'an endless disgusting mess' outside its building.

Smiley Happy People day nursery at Newport Industrial Estate backs on to the Co-op car park, where it keeps recycling containers.

Veronica Walters, owner of the nursery, told the Post that fly-tipping has been ongoing for around four years, but now it is becoming more of a health and safety hazard because rubbish is blocking a fire exit and blowing into the River Kensey. It is also encouraging pests and rodents.

Mrs Walters said: "We are constantly having to clear it up and pay for rubbish to be removed, which isn't fair.

"If there is a fire drill we have to take two-year-old toddlers out the back door where there are broken things and rubbish — it's absolutely lethal.

"It's not our job to do it, we are here to look after children; we shouldn't have to do it. People are chucking toilet seats down there and all sorts, it's an endless disgusting mess."
