The guest speaker at a meeting of the Holsworthy Community Forum, held at the hospital last Thursday, was Michael Smith of King's of Holsworthy who came to talk about the digital switchover, writes Christine Williams, our Holsworthy correspondent.

He began by explaining the technical details behind the switchover and said that digital TV can carry many more TV channels in the space occupied by one analogue service. Switching off the analogue services would free up space for a range of new services.

Holsworthy was served by two transmitters. The Huntshaw Cross transmitter had already begun the process and would complete it on July 29. The switchover from the Caradon Hill transmitter would start on August 12 and be completed on September 9. With both transmitters on full power the TV pictures should improve.

Attending the Forum for the first time was Maria Gray of 'Time for Life', a free service provided by Age Concern Devon, which has funding until next March. Based in Exeter, it assists people 50 and over to build confidence, to remain active and independent and taking steps to improve the quality of life. It does this by helping them to make new friends, to get out and about locally, learning new skills and exploring new experiences. The next Forum will take place at the hospital on Thursday, September 10, one week earlier than previously advertised.
