THE latest Wine and Wisdom event, which was the 12th annual one for Devon Aid Korogwe (DAK), was an enormous success attended by a record number of followers.
Twenty seven teams spent a most entertaining evening pitting their wit and wisdom against each other until the Verschoyle and Isaac teams were declared joint winners. While David Arney asked his usual and much enjoyed variety of questions, scorers David and Susan Hill coped admirably, as ever, with the increased number of teams.
The wonderful result of £900 is a tremendous boost to funds for helping yet another Korogwe, Tanzania village to access clean water. Helpers and all those attending were thanked for their support by the chairman, Vivien England, who told the gathering that over the years, with their support and that of people like them, DAK had supplied thirty seven villages. Since last Friday two more wells have been installed in number thirty eight.
The villagers play their part towards their projects either with a small financial contribution or by digging the trench for a pipeline and supplying stone and aggregate. This encourages them to feel proud of their achievement and helps them to be responsible and appreciate the ownership.
Illustrated talks about DAK are often given to local groups and schools. Broadwoodwidger Primary is one of the schools where the children listened seriously to try to identify with the children in the poor villages of East Africa where water is so precious and so time consuming to collect.
Journeys to fetch the daily requirements are often long and dusty only to access polluted and dangerous supplies. So on Pancake Day the Primary School arranged for the children to have a sponsored walk for DAK and their PTA while carrying a bucket. Some reached as far as a mile and they managed to donate a fantastic £74.75.
Vivien said: "Thanks go to all who organised and took part."
