THE Holsworthy Rural Community Transport (HRCT) trustees took the decision on Tuesday, June 13, to withdraw the Town Shuttle Service due to insufficient use.

The service will terminate at the end of June.

Martin Prentice, of HRCT, said: “It’s a great pity as it is a brilliant service and those who use it think it is great. However, there were just not enough people using it for it to be a viable proposition.

“The average number of users in a week is what we needed every day. I think the fare at £1 a single journey was very reasonable so that cost really can’t be the reason for the poor support. It would appear, in spite of what people say, that there is not a need for this type of service in the town.”

The cost of the service from its inauguration on March 13, to the end of June will be around £7,500 while fares for the same period will be around £1,000, the difference being borne by Holsworthy Community Transport.

Mr Prentice added: “It was run as a ‘trial service’ knowing that we would lose money until it was established but the organisation cannot continue to lose money at this rate.”

The service will terminate at the end of the month.
