THE former mayor of Launceston, John Moir, recently passed away at the age of 88 after suffering from bowel cancer. John leaves behind his wife Joyce, his three children Margaret, Stephen and Andrew, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
John (pictured right) was heavily involved in many aspects of life in Launceston over the years including being a former mayor (something he was very proud of), former chairman of both Launceston Rotary club and Launceston Probus.
He played golf and in recent times was involved with Dunheved Bowling Club, organising events and trips until very recently.
Along with his wife they were instrumental in setting up the Abbeyfield home in Launceston (now sadly closed) and helped set up the Launceston Foodbank.
A qualified accountant, he spent much of his life working for Peter Peter and Sons solicitors.
John was a deeply Christian man and was over the years involved in both the Church of England and in more recent times with Central Methodist Church in Launceston.
John’s memorial service is today (Thursday) at 12noon at Central Methodist Church in Launceston.
A minute’s silence was held at last week’s town council meeting.
