THE team leader of Launceston and Bude Day Services, Sarah Coleman, has approached Cornwall Councillor for Launceston Central Gemma Massey to change the current town bus service route to incorporate a stop in Newport Industrial Estate.

Launceston Day Centre, which helps look after people with a variety of issues, is based at Newport and Sarah believes that giving the clients the chance to use the the service will be of great benefit.

Sarah said: “Incorporating a stop at Newport Industrial Estate would be great news for us. It’s about supporting a group of people who need support accessing the community. Because of their disability it’s not easy for them to access public transport.

“At present we sometimes have to walk up to the town and the hill is imposing for them. The chance to get on a bus will help them stay safe from traffic and give them a voice.”

In recent weeks the clients have been given their own pass and Sarah says that a good number of people would use it.

Sarah said: “I think about eight or nine people from the centre would use it regularly. It’d be so empowering for these individuals to be able to get on the bus and go and use their own local town.”

“Cllr Massey came and spoke with us on Thursday, May 25 and she has told us that she’s going to look into it. The whole thing is in its infancy but hopefully a resolution can be found because it will make a lot difference to the people who use the day centre."
