A CARE home resident in Bude has proved himself to be a true daredevil — at the grand age of 92!

Mr William Green, a resident at Trelana Care Home, recently joined staff from the home on a zip wire jump to raise money for the residents’ fund.

His aim was also to show that life does not stop when you go into a care home.

The zip wire at Adrenalin Quarry is 490m long, 50m high and reaches a speed of 40mph. Twin parallel wires cross the flooded depths of the old quarry and sheer cliffs rise on either side.

What makes William’s adventure even more amazing is that he is 92-years-old and a double leg amputee. Carol Matthews, from Trelana Care Home, said William was ‘not scared in the slightest’ and was the first person to go down the zip.

Without a care in the world, he was off. Afterwards, William said the only thing he was ever scared of was his beloved late wife and mother-in-law.

William was joined by staff from the home and members of his family, who had travelled from all over the UK. In all, there were four generations jumping that day from great grandad William, to the youngest member of the family, six-year-old Jake. Like his great grandad, he was absolutely fearless.

William is already planning his next adventure with staff — a tandem skydive — details of which are currently being finalised.

William told the Post: “It was very good, I liked it a lot. I didn’t get nervous about it at all, actually. I liked it very much. I do anything I can get stuck into, really.

“Carol came up with the idea and so I went along with my family of four generations. I saw my six-year-old grandson go down the wire, along with my daughter, who is 60, and I’m 93!

“I think I’m a bit of a daredevil. I spent many years in the army in the war — I was one of those blokes who had a good war.”

William said that the worst part about the entire experience was being lifted into the harness and having to stay in an awkward position for 20 minutes or so, which ended up being uncomfortable for his back.

“Everything about it was really good,” he continued. “I’m planning to do a parachute jump of 10,000 feet in September, although we haven’t got a final date just yet. I’ve had a really good life, but I must admit I was a little devil when I was younger. I got into all sorts of trouble!”
