STRATTON Men's Institute at Pathfields, New Road (commonly referred to as Stratton Snooker Club) was unfortunately the victim of further vandalism over the weekend commencing Friday, July 9.

A committee member told the 'Post' that a large amount of damage was caused particularly to the pool hall — a room dedicated some years ago to John Wonnacott, who has kindly volunteered his various electrical and DIY services over the years. The pool table and light fittings suffered badly from the vandalism and costs to rectify the damage could run into hundreds of pounds.

The club, which has relied on the services of a voluntary committee to continue in existence and is maintained on a not-for-profit basis, has been the victim of five or six instances of theft or vandalism over the last ten years. On each occasion the costs to rectify the damage has drained funds.

The current committee has expressed much anger that a source of leisure activity being provided for the locals of Stratton, both old and young, on a voluntary basis has once again been treated with such disregard resulting in the closure of the club on a short-term basis. It has now re-opened to its members after the clean-up.

A club spokesperson said: "The current committee members have therefore indicated their desire to resign their services from the club. However, as represented throughout the country, there is a severe lack to volunteers who wish to provide their own time free of charge to maintain the upkeep of the club on a regular basis. It is therefore, with regret, that unless any locals express a desire to volunteer their services on the committee, that it will be shut down, along with a long and established history in Stratton.

"Following the closure of Bude Conservative Club and subsequent loss of snooker and billiards teams from that league, it would be sad and disappointing to lose yet another talented team. There is concern as to the effect that would have on the younger members' social activities."

He added: "Anybody wishing to join the committee should ring either Andrew Kennard on 01288 354268 or Vic Bickle on 01288 354853, otherwise closure at the end of the financial year on September 30 would appear a certainty."

● Bude Police have said damage is estimated at £1,050. Anyone with information is asked to contact Bude Police on 08452 777444 and quote log reference number BU/10/481.
