THERE is a group in our communities that are ignored and discriminated against. This group are found in every town and village; but unlike many other groups they appear to have no voice to bring about the changes they want to improve their lives. This ignored group are the young people in our society.
In recent months I have visited schools and spoken to many young people. Most feel left out of any decision making. They feel that young people are blamed for many things, but there are few facilities for them.
In Bude there are good youth facilities in the Neetside Centre, but these are too small and inadequate. From my discussions young people want better public transport, so that they are not so dependent on their parents, and better youth facilities. Looking around Bude town centre there are many empty properties, such as shops and offices.
Surely one of these could be converted to provide ideal premises for youth activities. This could become the focal point for youth activities and give younger people something to do in the centre of town.
The youth are the citizens of the future. The current provision is not adequate. I hope I am not alone in wanting to improve things for younger people in the Bude and Stratton area. I would be interested to hear from other readers to see if others are as concerned as I am.
Poughill and Stratton District Councillor, Bude.
