EYE-catching junk model monsters and animals made from vegetables or fruit were among the exhibits that won cups at this year’s St Giles-on-the-Heath horticultural show on Saturday, August 12.
These unusual items were a feature of the children’s section in which brothers Noah and Gabriel Rouen tied as winners of the cup for boys aged eleven and under, while Honey Sloman and Millie Stratton were joint winners of the cup for girls aged eleven and under.
The honour of winning the most cups in the show went to Carole Towl who won trophies in the flowers and pot plant section, the floral art classes and the cup for senior citizen with most points.
Organisers were delighted with the support for this year’s event, which, despite the poor growing season, attracted 218 entries — 34 less than last year.
While vegetables, flowers and floral art entries were all slightly down, the entries in the children’s classes and photographic classes had increased.
In addition, entries in the school section from pupils at St Giles primary school, including handicrafts, paintings and drawings, covered five tabletops in the main hall. Subjects ranged from paper collages of fruit or vegetables to an impressive ‘portrait gallery’ of Tudor royalty.
Show secretary Mrs Margaret Parfitt thanked all the exhibitors and said: “I think that despite the weather we have managed to produce a very good show.
“I would like to thank the committee and all the people behind the scenes who have worked so hard to make the show a success and also the judges and everyone who has come along to support the show.
“The flower show is looking for a new secretary now because I only took over again at the beginning of the year when our previous secretary, who had done the job for a year, left. If the show is to continue, it is time for someone else to take over.”
Cups and prizes were presented by Mr Shirley Fanson, who runs the village community shop.
Judges were: ‘vegetables and fruit’, Mark Preece; ‘homecraft’, Anne Rowe; ‘flowers, pot plants and floral art’, Ruth Allin; ‘art, handicraft and junior classes’, Jackie Perkin; ‘photography’, Andrew Axford.
