IT WILL be full steam ahead for the new season at Launceston Steam Railway, with two of their engines passing their boiler tests.
Two out of the steam railway’s four, heritage locomotives, ‘Covertcoat’ and ‘Dorothea’, went through the tasks during the railway’s ‘closed season.’
The two locomotives passed a major milestone when they were awarded their safety certificates. This means they are able to travel up the line to Kensey Valley to New Mills.
Of the track itself, more than 600 yards has been replaced with new rail and sleepers — all of which has been levelled and re-ballasted with local stone to ensure a smooth and safe ride.
The vintage carriages have all benefited from their share of refurbishment, while the buffet and shop will have had their annual ‘spring clean’ before the visitors arrive.
A return ticket will enable passenger’s unlimited travel all day — for those with less time for a full visit the new introduction of a discounted mid-afternoon ticket may be of interest.
The Launceston Steam Railway allows tourists and locals to view some of the best inland scenery available in North Cornwall —with steam power very much in charge, powering the way up the Kensey Valley.
The railway will re-open on March 25 — gates to the free car park open at 10.30am.
The vintage transport museum will also be open with a new extension, including a display of some rare motorcycles, accessible to the public later in the spring.
