A PUB in Cornwall has been fined £1000 after allowing people to sing, dance and chant in the premises without wearing facemasks during the England v Scotland football game.

The licensee, who Cornwall Council says can’t be named during an appeal period, has been fined after a video emerged showing a group of football fans at the pub ignoring Covid regulations.

The video shows a group of patrons without face coverings both inside and outside the premises during the match on Friday.

There was no evidence, says the local authority, that the pub’s management tried to address this behaviour or attempt to enforce social distancing measures.

The licensee was today [Thursday, June 24] given a fixed penalty notice of £1,000.

Councillor Martyn Alvey, the portfolio holder responsible for Public Protection at Cornwall Council, said: “It’s really disappointing to see businesses allowing this behaviour to take place at such a crucial time in the fight against Covid-19.

“We all know that case numbers have risen in recent weeks and this is having a significant effect on individuals and families, as well as businesses, some of which are struggling to stay open due to staff isolating. We must all play our part to prevent the spread of the virus.

“Most businesses are working hard to ensure that the restrictions are adhered to and we thank them for this. For those who blatantly disregard the rules, we will not hesitate to take enforcement action.”

Rachel Wigglesworth, director of Public Health for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, said: “In recent weeks we have seen a rise in cases both locally and nationally. This is predominantly because of the Delta variant which is much more transmissible and spreads very easily indoors. Therefore, it’s really important that we continue to follow the national guidance – hands, face, space and fresh air - to keep the virus at bay.

“I urge everyone to have the vaccine and, more importantly, make sure you have both doses. Also make twice-weekly testing part of your routine so we can identify cases, even when people have no symptoms.”

Rapid Lateral Flow Tests are free of charge and can be picked up from your local pharmacy or ordered online.
