BUDE Chess Club have won their first piece of silverware, the Cornwall Chess Association Roger Grime Cup.

This was a county-wide knockout tournament consisting of teams of four players. The final was played at Blisland against a team from Penwith.

Each of the Bude players, Geoff Lingard, John Constable, Chris Constable and Robert Bloxham won their respective games to give Bude a resounding victory.

This season the club is also playing in Division Two of the Cornish League and also in the Rapidplay 500 league.

They are currently top of the Roberts Cup division, with 21 points from six games.

The club meets at 7.30pm on Thursdays from September to May at the Royal British Legion on Burn View. They are always on the lookout for new players of all standards.

John and Chris Constable also run the junior chess club which meets at 6.30pm prior to the main club.

This term the juniors will be playing in the first-round of the UK Chess Challenge, a national competition. Last year four junior club members qualified for the county finals of the competition and two of those went on to qualify for one of the two national finals.

Even if players do not qualify for the next round, there are mascots and booklets to be won during the initial round.

Ideally juniors should be Key Stage 2 at school or above and new players are always welcome.
