NIGEL Pearce, Liberal Democrat Cornwall Councillor for Bude, told the latest Bude-Stratton Town Council meeting (Thursday, July 6) that he is delighted Cornwall Council has conducted a feasibility study with the aim of making it safer for children to cycle and walk to school in the Bude area.

Cllr Pearce asked Cornwall Council to conduct the study last year after visiting Bude Junior School where he talked about cycling to the children and realised that the majority of them would love to cycle to school, but could not as it was not safe enough to do so.

Cllr Pearce said: “Older generations like me took it for granted we could be safe on our roads years ago when we were young, but sadly young people today cannot.”

Cornwall Council’s study looked at 28 issues in Bude, including cycle lanes, improved crossing for pedestrians and cyclists and dual use of pavements and better design so that cyclist pedestrians and motorists could all be safer on the roads.

Cllr Pearce emphasised that all the issues in the feasibility study needed the Bude public’s support and funding before any of them could proceed, but was pleased it was ‘a step in the right direction and a good start’.
