CAMELFORD Town Council may still be in the running to purchase the former St John Ambulance hall in the town.

The Post previously reported that the council's bid was rejected by St John in favour of a higher amount, which topped £100,000. The guide price was £45,000.

The bidding process took place after councillors and members of the public spoke in favour of retaining the hall as a community asset.

However, clerk, Mr Lee Dunkley said the highest bidder has since pulled out and the town council was approached by the estate agent to see if it was still interested in buying the building.

At the last council meeting, councillors said they were still interested and an extraordinary meeting will be held on Monday, as a formality, to discuss the implications of taking out a Public Loans Board loan.

The council's bid will remain at £85,000.

Mr Dunkley said it was still early days but added that the council is now in a stronger position to purchase the hall.
