IT was all fun and games in Marhamchurch recently as residents and visitors came together to enjoy this year’s revel.
A number of locals, visitors and villagers attended 2025’s annual revel as the queen Alma Veale was crowned by Old Father Time who also gave his traditional speech in the village square.
The bough boys with their green branches stood behind as the queen opened the revel as per previous years and then rode a horse onto the revel field.
The Barrel Morris lead the procession, followed by her Marshall Joey, Page Duke, flower girls Eden and Halley, and her maids Issie, Aria, Bea, Alexia, Jenjen and Cantika. The royal party were followed by members of the public as they approached the revel field. After arriving, the royal party took to their seats on the stage, ready to oversee the afternoon events.
With the royal appointments out of the way, it was time for some fun, games and entertainment under the summer sun.
Entertaining the crowds in the sunshine were Bude Ukulele Band, The Barrel Morris and for the children Entertainingly Different. On top of this, there was plenty for young people to get involved with, including races and various parachute games - which even attracted some adult involvement.
Alongside the entertainment, there were some familiar faces amongst the stalls, as well as some new ones. The ever-popular cake stall made a return, while the ‘guess the weight of the pasty’ had people testing their estimation skills.
The Scouts’ barbecue tent was very popular too. In the Bray Institute, cream teas were available all afternoon where also the royal party enjoyed a special tea on stage.
Of course, what is a party without some prizes? And the revel grand prize draw offered some fantastic items.
This year the event was attended by Ben Maguire, MP for North Cornwall, who had a go on the smash the crockery stall, tombola, and enjoyed a traditional cream tea whilst engaging with the village locals.
Early evening saw a large crowd gathering for the ever popular pram race. Entries assembled in the village square. Nikki from the Bullers judged the array of entries. In the junior class race Jeo Break came first, Under the Sea came second with Clarkson’s Farm coming in third. In the fancy dress category, Under the Sea came first, Dippy Egg and Soldiers came second, and Mario Smart took third place.
In the senior class race Clarkson’s Farm took first place and Under the Sea second with Mad Max coming in third. In the senior fancy dress category Mad Max were awarded first place, with Under the Sea narrowly taking second, and Clarkson’s Farm third.
A spokesperson from the event said: “Thank you to Kerstie for organising and to Tony and George who compared the evening with great commentary, laughter and adding their personal touches to the event. Thank you too to Nikki and Sam from the Bullers Arms who very generously donated the refreshments.”
