A CONTROVERSIAL planning application to construct a pub, shop and community hall at Newtown Farm, Boyton, has been turned down by Cornwall Council East Sub-Area Planning Committee.
The application was considered by members of the committee when it met at Camelford last Thursday.
The application — submitted by Mr Lindsay Ellacott — sought permission for the construction of a single two-storey building to house a pub, a shop and a community hall.
The building would, if approved, take the form of two blocks, one to the north to feature the pub and shop and another linked block to the south to house the hall. The surrounding area would contain two car parks and an enclosed beer garden.
The committee discussed the application, and following a debate, it was recommended for refusal. Reasons for refusal included that the site was in an Area of Great Landscape Value; too large; out of scale; and concern over the dispersed development boundary of the village.
Ten councillors voted in favour of the recommendation to refuse the plans, two against and one abstained from the vote.
It is not yet known whether the applicant will appeal against the council's decision.
