IT was a unique occasion on Friday, February 23 at Launceston College when two choirs and a very talented young pianist — Ellie Fish — performed a wide range of music to help raise some funds for the Music Department of the college.
Launceston Male Voice Choir sang some pieces new to its repertoire for the first time, as well as some ‘old favourites’, directed by John Beare and Jonathan Mann (joint musical directors). They were accompanied by Carol Baker and Liz Mann
Under the inspired direction of Shelley Coulter-Smith the ‘LC Melodies’ group from the college sang a range of modern music ‘a cappela’ (unaccompanied) including solos from Ellie, and with the enthralling rhythms provided by Geovann Labial as their ‘beatboxer’. The College Mixed Choir also contributed some very complicated items and the fact that each year group from the college was represented, demonstrates yet again what depth of musical talent exists within our community.
An amazing sum of £302 was contributed through the retiring collection. This was donated to Robert Strike, head of music, and will be used to buy some new music for the whole of the music department, and showed how much the audience appreciated the evening. The enjoyment and enthusiasm created by the whole evening was such that it is now hoped that a similar concert could be arranged at some future date. Equally amazing is that the age range of those taking part covered seven decades, which shows just how much all types of music may be appreciated by so many.
