ST BREWARD’S latest community club ‘Moorland Community Cinema’ has been received with a great amount of support and has proved to be of interest for many local people.
In the autumn of 2015, the committee of the St Breward Institute and War Memorial Hall carried out some market research to find out what interest there may be in showing films in the Memorial Hall.
Non-copyright films were then screened as a trial run, receiving positive feedback from the community, and the majority favoured a Saturday afternoon showing.
Following this, the committee decided to apply for a license, and then made an application to Motion Pictures Licensing Company after an extensive search of various licensing authorities. Fortunately, a license was granted, with certain conditions attached, and in January 2016, the Moorland Film Club was launched, with a programme of films then gathered for the year.
By Easter, there was an obvious increase in interest in the club, with some people travelling from adjacent villages to get involved.
Earlier this month, the name of the club was changed to Moorland Community Cinema, due to people thinking that the club was something that had to involve a reliable commitment. However, the club’s objective was to provide a social event for people in the community to watch films that appeal to them.
There are currently 41 members within the age range of 50 to 85, 21 of whom are ‘single’ membership. More recently, the committee has been approached by parents, with young children between the ages of five and thirteen, about the possibility of showing films suitable for that age group in the Community Cinema, which the committee is currently investigating.
Over the next year, the committee hopes to show 12 classic films on a monthly basis, with four recent releases in between some of the main events.
Films are shown on the first Saturday of each month, with only a small charge being made to cover expenditure. Refreshments are also included in the contribution.
