COASTGUARDS have issued a warning to beach goers after two people was taken to hospital in the aftermath of an incident at Porthcothan.
During the incident, on August 10, two people had been seen jumping off of rocks on the northern side of the beach.
While they had done this previously, the duo were caught out by large waves which washed them into the sea. While they managed to scramble back onto the rocks to a place of safety, injuries were sustained.
The incident led to HM Coastguard issuing a warning to beachgoers that the ocean is unpredictable.
A spokesperson said: “While finishing at a previous tasking at Diggory’s, another job came through. Two people had been seen jumping off rocks on the northern side of the beach and one looked to be in difficulty. Newquay coastguard search & rescue team and Newquay RNLI Lifeboats were also tasked.
“It transpired that the casualties had been rock jumping in an area they had frequented many times before. A few waves, bigger than any others they had seen that evening, came through and washed them in to the sea. They managed to scramble back on to the rocks to a place of safety, but had sustained some injuries.
“The team arrived on scene and the casualties were medically assessed, treated accordingly and monitored.
“They were transported back to the beach car park, where a family member drove them to hospital to be checked over. We wish them a speedy recovery.
“The ocean is very unpredictable, no matter your experience or competencies. Please swim on lifeguarded beaches between 10am and 6pm.
“A huge thank you to the first informant that called this in to 999. We commend your vigilance and the casualties were also extremely grateful.
“If you see anyone in trouble, on or near the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
