THERE was a large turn out to this year’s Christmas lights switch on event in Launceston town square, with lots on offer for everyone.
The traditional Christmas lights switch on event was organised by the Launceston Chamber of Commerce and there were many different things on offer to keep the crowds entertained.
Chamber of commerce chairman, Sue Issleib, said: “It was a very successful event; everyone who came along had a wonderful time. It kicked off at 5pm with Magic Martin entertaining the young ones and he was followed by a performance from the Pop Choir.
“We then had a parade through the town of the carnival royalty, who switched on the lights, and they were accompanied by the Windmill and St Stephens Samba Band as well as a number of local children who were carrying lanterns.
“There were then carols played by the town band and a roundabout with fake snow for the younger children.”
A ‘throw the ball in the bucket’ game was also set up to challenge people to win an inflatable toy and children and adults alike were able to partake in the fun by purchasing their own light up stick or flashing ears.
Whilst the crowds flocked to see the traditional lights switch on event the chamber of commerce were supplying everyone with hot drinks of mulled wine and hot chocolate, to keep the cold evening chill at bay. They also served mince pies with all on offer being sold for suggested donations.
The chamber raised around £500, which they will put towards the upkeep, renewal and maintenance of the lights so that they will live on for another year.
Mrs Issleib added: “The money we raised will go towards the general upkeep and repair of the lights so that they can be used at next year’s event. We are all pleased with how this switch on went and are now looking forward to the late night shopping event. One down another to go as they say!”
