BILLED as ‘Choral Classics’ the concert given by Wadebridge Choral Society on Saturday, April 29, lived up to its billing.
The choir of 60 voices backed with the concert orchestra of some 30 players, including a harp, made glorious sounds as they performed works from the turn of the 19th into the 20th centuries.
Works by Vaughan Williams, Elgar, Stanford and Parry among others were on the programme, some familiar, some new to the audience. Two of the works featured new orchestrations by Nicholas Danks.
Soloist in Vaughan William’s ‘Five Mystical Songs’ was baritone David Fouracre, making his second appearance with the choir. The concert orchestra was led by Philip Montgomery-Smith and conducted by the choir’s director of music Mr Danks.
As a precursor to the concert, Mr Danks gave a talk about the works to be performed, placing them in the context of their period, to Friends of the Choir.
A memorable evening, concluding with Parry’s magnificent Coronation Anthem ‘I was Glad’, was greatly appreciated by the full audience.
The choir’s next concert will be at Egloshayle church on Saturday, July 22. The programe will include works by Leonard Bernstein and Bob Chilcott.
