School children in Bideford, North Devon got some special lessons from police this week as part of a road safety initiative.

Pupils in Year 5 at East the Water School had a visit from officers on Monday 6 February as part of the force’s Mini Police programme. Two classes of students took part in the speed watch morning with Youth Engagement Officer Matt Young and Neighbourhood Beat Manager Daniel Ciantar.

They tested drivers on a busy road near the school which has a 30mph limit.

PC Young, who helps co-ordinates the Mini Police programme for Devon & Cornwall Police, said: “This was a great opportunity to meet the classes, award certificates & judge their police car designs, as well as award a prize. It’s important that we engage with youngsters from an early age about important matters like road safety.”

“In two hours we recorded 16 motorists who were in excess of 33 mph with the worst of the day recording 43 mph.”

The speeding drivers will be advised of their excess speed and further action may be taken against them.

Sean Matthews, Year 5 Class Teacher, added: “All the children absolutely loved the speed awareness morning and are still talking about all those they caught speeding!
