IT was a real autumnal day, perfect for donning a new hat, on Saturday, September 3, as Val Healey was to discover following her sponsored head shave at the Wilsey Down, writes Helen Pusey.
Val said: “I am so excited not nervous. I am doing this in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support and in memory of my mum and a dear friend too.”
She wanted to show her appreciation to the Macmillan nurses following the support they had shown her mum, Pauline who bravely lost her battle with cancer four years ago.
The event was not only a time to remember Pauline Hayne’s life but also a joint birthday party for Debbie Bolt who was 50.
Val’s locks were shaved off by Stephanie Cornelius of Bliss Hairdressing, South Petherwin, who said: “I’m looking forward to cutting Val’s hair as it’s for such a good cause. I hope she raises lots of money and I am also combining it with the 50th celebrations afterwards.”
After Val was shorn she added: “I was prepared for this as I have several wigs to wear afterwards.”
Val’s father, Bill Hayne has also taken part in head shaves in the past. They are certainly quite a team when it comes to raising money for crucial charities like this one.
A prize draw had also been arranged by Val and her father, which seemed to raise even more funds with many notes in the pot for the tickets.
At present Val has raised approximately £1,100 but there is still money to come.
