THE sun shone at Broadclose Park in Bude on Sunday, June 9, as Plymouth Argyle Legends played the Jay’s AIM All Stars in a charity football match.

The game was organised to raise money and awareness for local charity Jay’s AIM.

Jay’s AIM was set up in memory of Jay Osborne and raises awareness of the risks and prevention of sudden cardiac arrest in the young. Jon Crompton, a former colleague of Jay’s at wealth management firm Brewin Dolphin in Exeter, organised the event with Paul Hart of Plymouth Argyle Legends.

Despite the terrible forecast the sun shone with crowds gathering before the game to enjoy drinks and BBQ food.

The game started positively with both sides passing the ball around nicely and creating some good chances.

It was the Argyle Legends who opened the scoring when an error from one of the All Stars enabled Wayne Powney to nip in and calmly slot home.

However the All Stars hit back almost immediately as some neat hold-up play from Steve Smeeth ended in a great through ball which was calmly despatched left-footed by Holsworthy manager Liam Dart.

The Pilgrims were back in the lead on the 30th minute when a cross from the right was left to run across the box and was swept home by Mark Damerell at the back post to lead at the break.

The game continued in good spirits in the second-half with several members of the Brewin Dolphin staff making valuable contributions up and down the pitch, however it was the men in green who struck first after the break; a great double save from Gary Dinshaw was rewarded by the ball rolling straight to ex Northern Ireland striker Warren Feeney who tapped home from five yards.

Jay’s AIM hit back quickly through striker Smeeth who managed to wriggle free and slot home in the 65th minute.

In the last few minutes both sides scored again, firstly it was Plymouth through an excellent solo effort from Powney before Wes Pugh dispatched a through ball with power from a tight angle.

The game ended a close 4-3 to the Argyle Legends.

Dan Osborne of Jay’s AIM commented: “We would like to thank all of the players for providing such brilliant entertainment today, we would also like to thank Greg Snowden and the other officials for stepping in at late notice, and Bude Town FC for agreeing to host the event.

“In the end we raised £637.51 and that will be doubled by Brewin Dolphin.”
