MEL Stride, the Conservative hoping to retain the Central Devon seat, has given a cautious assessment of his and his party's chances.

Shortly before 1am he said: 'Early signs are good for the Conservatives but we need to see more real results before we have a proper understanding of where this election is headed.'

His statement coincided with the latest result being announced in which the Tories increased their share of the vote to retain the Putney seat.

David Cameron was reported as being 'pleased' with the exit polls.
