A PARTY celebrated the opening of a new play park in Launceston at the weekend.

Those living locally to the Lanstephan Area Play Park are said to be already loving the improved area, and were able to celebrate at a party on Saturday, where youngsters were given goodie bags.

Planters and play equipment have brightened up the refurbished area, which a few years ago was likened to a ‘post-war bomb site’ by local residents.

This prompted work to transform the site by a group now known as the Lanstephan Area Play Park Group.

The group worked to secure grants to help ensure an inviting public space could be provided on the piece of land that was previously not being used.

Ahead of the celebration, a tree mural was painted in the park, which children were able to add their hand outlines to.

There was also face painting, games, and refreshments on offer.

Chairman of the Lanstephan Area Play Park Iris Lindsay said: “It was absolutely fantastic. The park was packed. It was a really successful afternoon.

“It’s looking really fantastic. Every time we drive past it’s full of kids.”

At the May meeting of Launceston Town Council, Cllr John Harris, said: “It’s looking fantastic. They have worked nearly three years virtually unassisted.”
