THE cattle at this year’s Holsworthy show were among some of the finest seen in years.

Among those who gained a top prize were the Haste family’s herd of cattle. One of Andrew Haste’s bulls, Cromwell Ironman, has attracted a lot of attention from the media lately.

He said: “We’ve been coming to the show for probably about 20 years; we are showing our British Blues today.

“There have been a good number of entries I’ve seen today and all of good quality. One of our heifers has won and we are very pleased so far; the bulls have done well.

Just before Mr Haste and his family went off to the ring to compete in the interbreed pairs, he added: “It is our local show and we always try and come out to support it.”

The interbred class then got underway and the judge said: “This really is a very good line up, we have bags of quality here today.”

This statement rang true for the rest of the show with a wealth of quality cows taking to the ring in the hopes of winning one of the coveted rosettes or trophies.

As the sun began to shine through the clouds for a short five-minute spell, the Post caught up with Lucy James, who was leading her boyfriend Sam Poole’s brown Limousin X, called Ruby, after winning in their recent class.

Lucy said: “We bought Ruby in Wales. It was actually on Facebook that we first saw her, but at the time we were over in New Zealand. When we got back we bought her and she has been with us ever since.

“She has been a bit naughty today and can be quite stressy at times but she has been alright, behaving a little better now anyway.

“The three commercial cows we have here today are ours. They all live together and just rock up to these shows every now and then.

“The champion Ruby is 16-months-old and the other two I have are called Rocky and Star. Overall we have had a good day.”

Lucy may have had a cow called Star but Kerensa Cobbledick and Latesha Colwill, from Bude, have a star of their own in the form of a South Devon cow.

Nicknamed the ‘first sociable cow’, Miss Lilly of the Trevoulter Herd could unfortunately not make it to the show this year, however, in her place were her representative ‘sisters’, who weren’t afraid to step into the lime light.

On the day the ‘girls’ had a bit of competition from their long-standing rivals AMC Eddy, from Hayle. When asked whether there was a battle going on, Latesha said: “Oh yes, there is a bit of rivalry between us and AMC Eddy; we always seem to be against them.”

This was to be AMC Eddy’s last Holsworthy Show, so tensions were high as the judges announced the winners. Unfortunately the girls were piped to the post with AMC Eddy winning first place, but they said they were pleased nonetheless with their result.

Whether they won a prize or not they were certainly the coolest looking cows around, with one blocking out the sun with a pair of neon pink shades. Kerensa said: “We are really pleased with how we have done overall today. Our cows are dudes, they put up with a lot from us.

“Trevoulter Saffron is Lilly’s ‘buddy’. She can’t really be called her sister as they have different fathers.

“Our cows are by far the trendiest here — our girls tweet, use Instagram and Facebook. They even have their own Youtube channel.”

The Trevoulter herd of South Devon cows have become popular with their fan base as they allow their ‘fans’ to watch a live stream of what they get up to at each show they attend.

Kerensa said: “They are pretty trendy, someone called them ‘trendy cows’ and another has referred to Miss Lilly as a ‘sociable queen’.

“We have even been called a ‘breathe of fresh air’, we even got our hashtag trending at Okehampton Show. Miss Lilly is really the spokesperson of the herd, she lets everyone know what they are getting up to.”

Their male, named Trevoulter Adwen, won his class and the female, Trevoulter Saffron came in third.

Overall Kerensa added: “We have had a great day even with this rain. We want to thank our sponsors GP Engineering, a local company, for their support and if people can use the hashtag #1stSociableCow that would be great!”
