FROM top versus bottom in midweek to second bottom versus bottom on Saturday, Wadebridge Town though are seven points clear of Holsworthy, both sides have to win, winner takes all, writes Alistair Clements.
The difference though is that the home side have started to get their act together in the last week or or two, while the visitors continue to go through a torrid time.
And what a disappointment, drawing at half time, holding their own and looking as if they were quite able to win once they changed ends and benefitted from the howling wind, they promptly lost all their shape, fell apart and snatched defeat from the jaws of success. Everyone in the ground expected them to win with the conditions to their favour but credit the home side with digging deep and pulling together.
A wet pitch, only passed fit to play half an hour before kick off (it was perfectly playable even if it militated against flowing or pretty football), blowing a gale in Wadebridge's favour in the first half.
Little of real interest actually happened although Holsworthy were workmanlike, the only real features being a Tom Cole booking for jumping into a tackle which on other days could well have seen him going home early (and continuing to argue the pitch and toss with no justification for doing so), and a super crossfield ball from Dean Chidley to Rikki Tuckwell which he was unlucky not to put away.
Second half, full of hope and expectation and the score still level, a cross from the right wing to Wadebridge's Josh Insley (once of Holsworthy), standing alone and the home side went one up.Their Glen Squires then ran through the middle of the defence unopposed, Chris Wearing in the visitors' goal saved well at his feet only for the rebound to hit him on the back and roll into the net for number two.
Wearing then pulled off a brilliant one handed save only to pull down an attacker outside the box and was very lucky not to have his autograph taken, the referee sensibly adopting the view that it was not malicious and not helped by the wet surface (Wearing took the sensible course of action, put his hands up in deference, accepted he was wrong and received no admonishment, others please note).
Squires shot through a ruck of players for number three to end a depressing half.
Holsworthy really had no clear cut chances and the final result sadly says everything.
