ON the hunt for Helen, a lady from Stratton hopes that one of the Post’s readers will be able to help provide information about the mystery woman.

After her mother showed a vague disliking of the name Helen, Susan Jarman found a picture with the name ‘Helen’ written on the back and decided to go on the hunt for who this mystery woman could be.

Susan said: “For many years I have been trying to solve a mystery to find who Helen is in the enclosed photo with my mother.”

She explained that when they was expecting their first child and choosing names, one they were thinking about was ‘Helen’.

When she told her mother about the possible name, she said: “Don’t have Helen.“

When Susan asked why she shouldn’t have the name Helen, her mother replied in an adamant way: “Just don’t”.

Susan explained the history of the photographs she had found, she said: “I thought it a little odd but never took it further. After my parents had sadly passed away I found the photo and on the back it says Pam and Helen July 1941.”

“I have researched the name Helen, with possible family names but to no avail. My mother’s name was Pamela Farndon and she would have been 17 years in the photo.

“My aunt was evacuated to 6 New Road, Stratton and my cousin was born in the Flexbury Park nursing home. I did contact a gentleman some years ago who owned this house and he was very helpful. He said someone locally remembered the Blackler family. They lived there until 1947.”

Both photographs seem to be taken in the same garden and are thought to possibly have been taken at the same time.

Susan’s cousin was born in 1941 but as they look older than Helen in the photograph it is presumed it may have been a little later.

Susan hopes that someone will be able to help her on her quest to find out some more information.

Susan said: “I would love to find out a conclusion to this mystery. Maybe Helen was not anything to do with our family but it just seemed strange that my mother wouldn’t give any further information.”

If any readers think they know who Helen is or can provide Susan with any information they are asked to get in touch with the Post by emailing [email protected] or by calling 01566 778214.
