A SCHOOL is seeking help from local businesses to carry out a range of outdoor projects.

St Stephens Community Academy in Launceston has plans to create a wildflower meadow and even a hedgehog house.

A cake sale held at the school last month raised funds that will go towards different ‘phases’ of outdoor projects.

Phase one will see the creation of a wildflower meadow, pathing, a chicken run and house and a hedgehog house.

They would like to connect two wood areas with a hedgerow path in phase two, to help outdoor learning.

The school would then like to place hanging baskets and planters around the school, and re-dig flower beds and plant soft fruits, and phase five would provide the school with animal pens for ducks and rabbits.

To achieve all that it would like to, the school needs chicken wire, wood, stone or slabs, hanging baskets and plants, pot plants, soil, compost, raised bed flowers, soft fruit plants, a shed and wire.

The school has started digging for the wildflower area — a sponsored dig raised over £100.

St Stephens’ arts leader Kari Gilbert said: “We are developing the grounds so that we can have animals and more growing areas. We are raising money to buy equipment for building the runs, and resources such as compost, plants etc.

“Our cake sale raised £60 and we also had a sponsored dig, to prepare our wild flower area, which raised over £100.

“We have asked for help from local businesses. We have also planted apple trees, had outdoor learning days, and have recently received 30 saplings from the Woodland Trust, which we are now in the process of planting — one set as a walkway and one set as a maze (all native species).”
