The Chamber of Commerce in Launceston is delighted that a number of new shops are to open in the town.

Irena Jordi-Slater, chairperson of Launceston Chamber of Commerce said: “We have been looking at ways to brighten up the empty shop fronts. Unfortunately legalities make it really difficult, but we are still looking at ways. Before Christmas we asked Annie Mitchell to bring in some pop-up shops, which worked very well. But there is also good news with some new shops opening up soon.”

Ms Jordi-Slate also expressed sympathy to the staff of Kensey Foods on Pennygillam Industrial Estate, which has started a period of consultation, which could lead to a potential closure of the factory.

“Our sympathy goes out to Kensey Foods and their staff and we wish them much strength and patience in this difficult time. We offer them free CV writing courses and they have all our support helping them on the way for new work opportunities.”

The Chamber of Commerce holds monthly networking breakfasts, every second Thursday, which are going well and are becoming quite popular. They are usually sponsored by businesses to be free for our members.

The next event is today (Thursday) from 7.30am to 9am at the Launceston Golf club. Non-members are welcome too. Booking is essential.

She also praised shops and members of staff for the part they played in last year’s festive activities.

“Thank you to all the shops in town for staying open late on the Thursdays in December and on the Sunday before Christmas. It was a trial and we are open for discussion for the next Christmas period.

“The Christmas Extravaganza and response was huge. We thank all volunteers who helped on the night. Many of the visitors will return to Launceston at some point. This leads me to the Saturday opening times initiative, which was launched about 20 months ago. We invite all shops in town to stay open on Saturdays till 4pm. Many thanks for your co-operation.

“I’m pleased to announce that a big joint networking event is planned in Launceston, with the Cornwall Chamber. It is something we have been working on over the last few months. This would allow our business community to connect with a greater network and put Launceston on the map, the Gateway to Cornwall. Details to follow.”

The chamber is currently working on a new website and looking to do some research into what they can do to improve the chamber.

Many businesses will be approached in the nearer future and be invited to sat what they want from their local chamber, how it can help and be of greater support.
