CATS, a community based project — Community Action Through Sport — was designed to 'promote and award positive community action.' First set up in Bude the scheme has already had national success by winning the Youth Sport Trust Innovations award. The scheme was developed following an increase in anti-social behaviour around Bude. It was recognised that many young people were making significant contributions to the community on a voluntary basis, but with no recognition of their efforts a negative image of young people was reinforced. Evidence has shown that this scheme strengthens the links within communities and helps to resolve some of the issues. Besides promoting a healthier lifestyle and informing people of what is happening in their community, a reduction in crime and anti- social behaviour also emerged.
