RESIDENTS in Bude have spoken out about the state of the town’s public transport system, warning of safety issues, delays, and even the town being gridlocked.

In recent week’s the town’s public transport network has been in the spotlight, with the introduction of a new park and ride system, roadworks and changes to car parks. However, this week, one resident has called it ‘one of the worst days’ they’ve ever seen for public transport in Bude.

Local resident Paul Coupland recently spoke out about the state of the town’s transport system describing what he experienced as ‘beyond acceptable’.

“I understand that on busy days there will always be teething problems when a new park and ride starts,” he said. “But what I witnessed today was beyond acceptable. There appeared to be very little organisation, public bus services struggling to operate, park and ride buses moving constantly, and passengers left confused about where they should be.”

Launched by Future Coast Bude the park and ride pilot scheme service was created in an effort to offer a simple and affordable way to access the town centre and beaches during the busy summer season.

The service runs every 20 minutes between 8am and 7pm, seven days a week and will be stoping at both The Strand and Crooklets.

However, according to Paul there have been a number of issues with the service, including those putting people in danger.

He said: “The most worrying moment was watching an elderly lady trying to board a bus when a park and ride bus suddenly pulled away. Thankfully, other passengers shouted for her to move back before she was put in real danger. It was a frightening moment that could easily have ended in a serious injury.

“Safety has to come first. There needs to be proper traffic management, with trained marshals or traffic coordinators on site throughout the day to keep buses, pedestrians and vehicles moving safely. Public transport should work for everyone, not become a hazard.”

Paul even said that the service failed to meet the criteria it was established for.

He said: “On top of that, the delays were unbelievable. Bude was effectively gridlocked for around an hour and a half. Residents, visitors and bus passengers were all caught up in the chaos.

“This isn't about pointing fingers at individual drivers it's about asking those responsible to review what happened and make improvements before someone gets seriously hurt. We need a transport system that is safe, organised and reliable, not one that leaves people frustrated and worried about their safety.

“Today wasn't good enough, and I hope those in charge take these concerns seriously before an avoidable accident happens.”
