OWEN Morice is no stranger to adventure and this month he will be taking on a fundraising trek for the RNLI.

Owen is originally from Launceston but spent much of his time in Bude, at Summerleaze and Widemouth in particular, riding waves. Having spent time in the military he returned home and found enjoyment in weekend backpacking trips and decided he wanted to combine these passions for an exciting new fundraiser.

Owen will be walking the Cornish section of the Southwest Coastal Path covering 288miles/460km. He plans to visit all the RNLI stations along the way, starting out at his local station in Bude.

Owen told the Post: “I grew up in Launceston and have intermittently lived in Bude. So, growing up in Launceston me and my friends all bodyboarded at Summerleaze and Widemouth. I spent four years in the Air Force and when I left, I ended up in Exeter and would still come to Bude whenever I could to take member of Exeter Canoe Club surf kayaking as one of their volunteer coaches.”

Having the knowledge that the RNLI was just a phone call away was a great comfort to him and his friends as they navigated the often-treacherous waters, and he was keen to do his bit to give something back.

“In the last few years, I’ve moved towards surfing and have had a few occasions where people were in trouble in the water and it’s always been massively reassuring that the RNLI are just a phone call away if either a local surfer or visitors to Cornwall who are less familiar with the sea conditions find themselves in trouble, and even with experience this could happen to anyone.

“I’m planning to do a charity walk along the Cornish section of the Southwest Coastal Path next month, starting in Bude and ending up in Plymouth and covering 288miles/460km. I’m going to be fund raising for the RNLI, so I’ll set off from their station in Bude and visit the other 12 stations we have along the Cornish coast on my route.

“When I left the military, I still really enjoyed weekends backpacking and this trip seems like a really cool way of combining two passions of mine for a good cause.”
