THE Bude branch of the Royal Naval Association (RNA) has pledged its support to a former Royal Marine intending to row across the Atlantic, solo and unsupported.

This being the season of goodwill, RNA members are asking local people to be generous enough to support ‘The Rowing Marine’ — also known as Lee Spencer — in his charitable effort.

Lee intends to single-handedly row from Gibraltar to Venezuela in January 2018, tackling 3,500 miles of rather turbulent water in an attempt to not only beat the existing solo record, but also to support the RM charity and the Endeavour Fund. Lee is also an amputee.

After a long service in the Royal Marine Corps in numerous arenas, he eventually retired in one piece as a C/Sgt. It was only when he went to the aid of a stranded motorist that he suffered the amputation as a result of a vehicle accident when impact debris severed his leg.

‘Bootnecks’, as they are affectionately known, are made of stern stuff. Lee has already been part of a four-man rowing team, who only had three remaining legs amongst them.

His fundraising target is £100,000, and as of December 8, Lee was 6% towards his target. Modest, but generous, contributions can help enormously. To support Lee, go to https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/LeeJSpencer.

Alternatively, send a cheque made payable to Bude RNA Hon Secty, Bude RNA, 9, Shortlands, Pyworthy, Holsworthy, Devon, EX22 6SY — every penny will be forwarded to the cause.

An RNA spokesperson said: “Our sincere and grateful thanks to all responders — and Lee will be delighted also!”
