A PLANNING application for the change of use of an office/betting shop to residential accommodation was discussed at last week’s Camelford Town Council meeting.

The application, submitted to Cornwall Council by Tim Burnett, seeks permission for the proposed change of use from its current form to one unit of residential accommodation at 22 Fore Street, Camelford.

Clerk to the council, Lee Dunkley, said a letter had been received from Camelford Chamber of Commerce, which raised strong objections to the proposal.

They stated the plans, if approved, would be detrimental to the high street trading; would not be in keeping with the immediate surroundings; and would have an adverse effect on the town’s infrastructure.

Cllr Andy Shaw told councillors that, as far as he could ascertain, a commercial property has to be properly marketed for 12 months or more before a change of use can be considered.

“Until that property’s on the market and is marketed for 12 months I would say no we wouldn’t accept this as a right way of change of use to make it residential.”

Mayor, Cllr Rob Rotchell said: “I would agree personally that I would want to see it as a shop in perpetuity.”

Cllr Shaw proposed that the council does not support the application. Cllr Shirley Goodman seconded and all councillors voted in favour.

The final decision is expected to be made by Cornwall Council’s planning committee.
