TWO Belgian women visited Launceston to find out how their family had lived while refugees in the town during the first world war. One hundred years on since the start of the war and when refugees were living in the town, mother and daughter Hertha Govaert and Karen Cure wanted to visit the place where Elvira, Hertha's mother, had lived and gone to school. Elvira Falleyn was one of seven children: Germaine, Karel, Alive, Richard, Jozef and her youngest brother, Albert, who was born in England. The family moved to Launceston with their parents, Ernest Falleyn and Chlothilda Hoeraet, as part of 91 refugees from Belgium.
