PLAYING the league leaders, who have won all but one game this season, with scores reaching double figures, Bude went onto the pitch prepared for the challenge.

Determined to play an attacking game, Bude started well and soon found themselves hassling the home side's defence. Leanne Stanbury linked Bude's midfield, Tammy Snowsill, Robyn Pengilly, Di Old and Naomi Hatcher, with the forwards well.

When the university side had free hits, Bude's forwards, Briony Varcoe, Perdi Sobey and Sam and Emily Horn marked effectively, forcing them to make mistakes. Bude had a number of short corners but were unable to convert them.

When given the opportunity, Marjons were quick to break. Gemma Smith, back in goal for Bude for the first time since the end of last season, pulled some outstanding saves out of the bag to deflect any shots fired at her. Bude's defence, Sharon Rundle, Kirsty Heslop, Pam Johns and Miranda Pomeroy stood their ground, putting in some strong tackles and, a couple of times, clearing shots off the line.

With scores level at half time, Bude went back onto the pitch still focused on not conceding any goals. This seemed to result in Bude playing a much more defensive game, with Marjons having a lot of possession.

However, their 100 per cent commitment and determination meant Bude denied Marjons from taking the lead, causing frustration for the home players. With a large squad, Bude were able to bring on fresh legs, including Caroline Hobbs, and keep up their work rate.

As tensions mounted, Bude's Leanne Stanbury was sent off, while the Marjons player also involved in the altercation, received a green card.

With 10 players and only two minutes to go, Bude were understandably disappointed when Marjons scored the winning goal from a short corner.
