My only disappointment with Hilary Vivian's letter in this week's Post (April 9), is that she beat me into print on the issue of the sculptural abominations by Bude Canal.

Like her, I have been angered over these artless and visually polluting deposits which have been dumped by the tow path, and was keen to vent my spleen through the traditional method of a letter to the press. My anger was given a further boost, almost to a point of incandescence, when I heard on the grapevine (admittedly not a reliable source), that the total cost of these items was 27,000 pounds, a significant sum which could have been so much better spent on other projects to improve the attractiveness of Bude's waterfront.

I have no doubt that some will leap to the defence of the sculptures in the hallowed name of culture, and under the banner of the sanctity of art and the creative process. Absolute rubbish! We have been conned for too long by those without talent, who seek to push the boundaries of what is beautiful in the field of visual arts, and then to persuade those who believe it is trendy to go with this particular flow, into sanctioning their output to be put on public display at public cost.

I am sure that Hilary Vivian's letter will receive wide support. If it does, I propose that a complete file of the responses be sent to the new centralised Cornwall Council, with a suggestion that the sculptures be removed from the canal side, and dumped in the gardens of those who commissioned the project, which was authorised as far as I am aware, without any public consultation.
