BUDE Surf Veterans (BSV) has become the ‘go to’ group within the military veterans community in respect of using surfing as a recovery tool.

Individuals suffering with physical injuries and or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) have been flocking to the volunteer group based in Bude.

The group organise surf meets on at least a twice weekly basis throughout the year (COVID-19 regulations permitting) which bring military veterans together with veterans and local members of the surfing community.

The North Atlantic, more specifically Summerleaze, becomes the place for individuals with often complex injuries, emotional and mental health issues to undertake a physical activity that can be challenging but ultimately very rewarding. A series of surf sessions with qualified surf instructors, coupled with the pre and post surf ‘meet’ interaction with like minded individuals can vastly improve both physical and mental health, and be the catalyst for significant recovery. Surfing with BSV has been for many military veterans life affirming, and in some cases lifesaving. BSV has forged close relationships with Help for Heroes and Hasler (Naval Service Recovery Centre, Plymouth) assisting there respective veterans and enlisted personnel with surfing as part of a recovery programme.

In 2020 BSV applied for, and subsequently received a Positive Pathways programme grant to be utilised for military veterans to undertake surfing activities alongside like minded individuals with the collective goal to improve physical and mental well-being. BSV’s initial use of Positive Pathways programme grant money was the selection of five BSV members to attend life saving and surf instructor courses. Under the tutelage of Mr Smudge Smith of Saltwater Safari five candidates were successful in completing a Surf Coach Safety and Rescue Competency Award. The Positive Pathways programme grant has not only paid for the course fees, food and accommodation but essential lifesaving tools which are now part of the group equipment inventory and will be utilised on courses moving forward.

The successful quintet then successfully completed a Level 1 Surf Instructors course. They had predominantly acquired most of their surfing experience with members of BSV, receiving surf instruction from fellow previously qualified veterans. They are now in a position to instruct novice surfing veterans maintaining the group ethos of veterans helping veterans.

Any military veteran that would like a surfing ‘taster’ contact BSV through Facebook. The prerequisite clothing and equipment is provided free of charge.
