Holsworthy Golf Club's Junior organiser Andy Morris was well pleased not only with the number who turned out for their competition but also with the quality of the golf, particularly that of Adam Isaac who is a sure star of the future with Albert Shepherd, too, showing promise.

The junior league leaders currently are Portmore with Holsworthy a close second, only one point separating the teams. Junior captain, Simon Moore, topped the division one players ahead of Daniel Shadrick with Adam Isaac's effort giving him top spot in division two.

Simon also demonstrated his undoubted prowess in the mid-week Stableford, his 40 points putting him very well ahead of Steve Kiff, Mark Bellew and Nick Lapham, each of whom came in with 35 points, the slide rule coming into play to finalise the placings.

The visit of Tavistock veterans brought a smile to captain Tony Tomassi's face with the hosts winning the match in grand style, following on from a run of losses albeit away from home, the final score being 5½ to ½. Tony and Bob Gelder led off with a win by 3 and 2 quickly followed by Tony Downing and Alan Richardson winners by 4 and 3 with the next two pairings having to pull out all the stops getting ahead in the later stages, Albert Taylor and Mike Herbert by 2 holes and by Colin Walmsley and Syd Pinder 1 up.

The two Johns, Faithful and Plumstead, ground out a half with the last pair of Bill Thomson and Dick Webb victors by 3 and 1 to round off an excellent afternoon played in the right spirit, a little of which went down well with Caroline and Joe's 'Dish of the Day' later.

Not so fortunate was the Emerton Court team that travelled to Saunton for the away leg of the second round, coming away with a loss of 4½ to ½. However, the players were not downhearted with three of the pairings taking the game to the later stages, the full result being Alan Abrams and Ray Holness lost 4 and 3, Reg Daniel and Brian Hayes lost 1 down, George Booth and Brian Axford lost 4 and 3, Syd Pearce and Colin Walmsley halved and finally Ian Hemmings and Chris Woolley lost 2 and 1.

The second round of the Vets Championship was played with mist and drizzle not conducive to low scoring or so it was thought, but certainly not by John Masters who followed up his first round 69 with an excellent 68 to take the victor's rostrum. However on the day it was Bob Gelder who took the plaudits with a superb 65, the best in Division I ahead of John Masters with Les Byrne's 69 giving him third place.

As for Division II, Gordon Dimbleby went up two places from the first round, his 73 being tops ahead of Alan Whittle 75 and Eddie Littlewood 76. The overall result was champion, John Masters, second Bob Gelder and third Les Byrne.

The ladies continue to make their presence felt in the county Sheila Creasey competition, taking on East Devon at home to win decisively by 5½ to 1½ . Lady captain, Yvonne Bowler, won 2 and 1 as did Pauline Bezzant. Sue Griffiths was unlucky going down by 1 hole, Stephanie May won 3 and 1, Hilary Dorren won 7 and 6, Gwen Adams won 4 and 3 with Betty Byrne getting the half. As Yvonne opinioned, a good result in good company, played on an excellent course, that's how golf ought to be.
