VETERINARY surgeon, Nigel Hicks from Castle Veterinary Group in Launceston, recently returned to Borneo to continue his work at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre.
Below is a taster from his trip, the full report can be found in this week's 'Post'.
"Currently in Borneo on my fifth extended trip as veterinary surgeon at Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, Sabah, the closest I have been to bovines is the small herd of beef cattle that wanders through the grounds of the local tourist bed and breakfast enterprise.
"Working for the UK charity Orangutan Appeal UK both Loretta and I from the Castle Veterinary Group have both spent time here in the last four months. An absence of any local veterinary cover and an outbreak of hepatitis in the orangutan led to an urgent cry for veterinary help and our presence here.
"In a contrast to our normal cattle work we have found ourselves treating orangutan, elephant, sun bears, reticulated python, Slow Loris, and a domestic cat!"
