MORE than 200 young people attended this year’s Holsworthy and District Lions’ ‘Fun Day’ on Sunday, November 17, to enjoy the variety of fun fair activities on offer.

Held in Holsworthy’s Memorial Hall and car park, the event was a huge success — it really was a day to remember.

Event organiser Lion Ted Flaherty was delighted to see such a large turn out to this annual event, with visitors travelling from as far away as Weston-Super-Mare to join in the fun. He said: “This annual event has been going for 25 plus years now. The day was a great success, we had good weather conditions and lots of attendees.”

The day typically runs from noon to 3pm on the Sunday after Holsworthy Carnival, and provides an entertaining day out for all. Ted said: “It is a day for people with special needs to come and enjoy and is free to everyone attending. There are dodgems and other fairground rides as well as a disco and the usual fair food like burgers and hotdogs.

“In terms of numbers this year we had over 200 guests and they would bring their own helpers, which was around another 120 people.”

The day was supported by many local people and organisations, who provided entertainment for the hundreds of guests. Ted said: “We had about 65 local people and organisations helping out on the day to enable us to carry out the event safely.

“It is run by us the Holsworthy and Stratton District Lions and the help and support of local people allows us to continue to hold it in the Memorial Hall and car park.”

The Lions’ Fun Day has become infamous with Lions from across the South West spreading the word. Ted said: “We get a lot of support from members of other Lions clubs who attend and help. Visitors from as far away as Weston-Super-Mare came down to enjoy the day. Word is distributed about the event through the South West area by other Lions organisations and it is great to have that support.”
