WHITSTONE Wanderers will face Budehaven A or Budehaven E in the North Cornwall Table Tennis League Handicap Cup final next month after a thrilling 5-4 victory at league rivals Crackington B last Thursday night.

Wanderers had beaten North Hill B last Thursday in the last four of the Division Two Knockout Cup to set up a date with Crackington B in the final at Bridgerule on Friday night (March 23), but in the pre-curser to the event, it was Doug Genini’s side who went through.

There was never more than one point between the teams all night with Ross Paynter’s three victories for the hosts giving them a 4-3 lead.

However, Barry Stearman and Genini then showed excellent composure to overcome Robin Evans and Keiron Chatterjea and book their place in the final.

Crackington’s other point came from Robin Evans with Stearman and Woodhouse contributing a brace apiece for the visitors.

There’s now just one fixture left to be played across the league’s three divisions.

In Division One, runners-up North Hill A beat bottom side Helland B 9-1, which means that they finished six-points behind champions Helland A.

Despite skipper Martin Hynes not playing, Bob Thompson and Shirley Luckhurst enjoyed comfortable evenings to win all three while Adrian Davis won two, losing to promising youngster Harry Tinker.

The final match to be played in Division One will be played on Thursday, April 5 when Budehaven A will look to leapfrog Torridge into third when they travel to Helland B.

In Division Two, bottom club Bridgerule A finished their allocation of fixtures with two games in the space of 24 hours.

Last Thursday they lost 7-3 at North Hill B before Launceston beat them 9-1 at Bridgerule Village Hall on the following night.

At North Hill, the man-of-the-match award went to visiting skipper Alan Quilter, who got the better of Michael Kinger, Trevor Luckhurst and Dave Aplin, but the home trio all beat Jay Brewer and Ray Bewes as well as winning the doubles to end a difficult season on a positive note.

Launceston themselves ended up sixth in the eight-team division but they were glad to win 9-1 at Bridgerule in a match where the scoreline doesn’t tell the whole story.

Five of the matches went to deciders with Quilter involved in three of those. However, he could only get the better of Lois Atkin, who herself picked up a couple of rare victories against Brewer and Bewes in matches, which went the distance.

Stephen Parsons and Karen Horrell ended their campaigns on a high with three wins from three as Launceston finished on 57 points, eight points behind Altarnun.

Budehaven E won the league and cup double in the third-tier as they beat Budehaven F in the Division Three Knockout Cup final at Budehaven Sports Hall.

Budehaven F’s Ezra Jukes beat Budehaven D’s John Gillin in the last four, before being joined by the rapidly-improving Sam Jennings to take on Tim Orchard and Robin Worden.

Jennings beat Orchard and Worden — the first time that Orchard had lost in a Division Three competition all season — to set up a decider in the doubles after the experienced duo both defeated Jukes.

In the doubles decider, the experience told as they won 3-0, although the first two games were won 12-10.

Tonight sees the first of two weeks of the league’s Individual Championships, with the Handicap Singles, Junior Singles and Super Veterans all taking place. The Individual Championships are being held at Budehaven Sports Hall. Play starts at 7pm.
