North Cornwall Table Tennis League 2019/20 — latest results

WHITSTONE Wanderers picked up their first win of the season in Division One last Thursday night with a 6-4 success at bottom side Budehaven D.

The two sides fought out a 5-5 draw when they met seven days earlier in the league, but it was Whitstone who started the brighter as Doug Genini and Barry Stearman won their opening matches in four ends.

Gary Bickle thrashed Nathan Jukes to pull one back but Genini added a second victory to make it 3-1.

Jukes then withstood a superb comeback from Anthony Ward to take the decider and make it 4-1.

The hosts then hit back with Bickle beating Barry Stearman before Bickle and Ward combined in the doubles to move back to within one.

But Jukes recorded a second victory of the evening against Andrew Ward before Genini completed an excellent treble by beating the hard-hitting Bickle in straight ends.

Anthony Ward then beat Stearman in the night’s final match to make it 6-4.

Across the sports centre, Helland moved back to fourth in the table with an 8-2 success against Budehaven C.

The visitors dominated throughout but found Sam Jennings in sparkling form.

The teenager won the night’s opener from 2-1 down against Ingus Abolnieks before doing likewise against Mike Fisher to make 3-2.

But with Ritchie Bartlett not dropping a set all night, and Abolnieks and Fisher claiming a brace apiece, Helland won the next five games to move above Budehaven B and Budehaven A who were both without a game.

The match between North Hill A and Crackington A was postponed.

Division Two champions Crackington A rounded off an unbeaten season with a 14th win from as many games at bottom side North Hill C last Thursday night.

Zach Parker and Keiron Chatterjea each won three comfortably although Judith Cook had to fight back from 2-1 down to beat John Parker.

North Hill C finished their programme 24 hours later at Bridgerule A, but were whitewashed again as Alan Quilter, Jay Brewer and Shaun Collins all enjoyed unbeaten evenings for the hosts.

Altarnun A moved up to third with a 6-4 success at Crackington C, with Paul Burden managing a treble for the visitors.

He was ably supported by Alex Whitfield who won two himself and teamed with Burden in the doubles.

The Crackington trio of Trevor Dean, Simon Patterson and James Ellis all beat Simon Holmes with Ellis also getting the better of Whitfield.

In Division Three, leaders Budehaven F ended Altarnun B’s ten-match unbeaten run with a 3-2 victory at the Budehaven Sports Centre.

With skipper Phil Hawken absent, Alex Worth joined forces with Ezra Jukes and both beat Malcolm Tulip, although Dave Jones edged out the pair.

The doubles saw Altarnun’s other players, William Salt and Mike Tremeer take over, but the youth of Jukes and Worth won the day.

Elsewhere, Budehaven G won 4-1 against bottom side Bridgerule C. Robert Clarke-Feltham won twice as well as in the doubles with David Scott. Sonia Collins defeated Scott for the Bridgerule point.

Division Two side Budehaven E will face Helland in the last four of the Handicap Knockout after a 5-3 success at Division One title challengers North Hill A.

Budehaven were given headstarts ranging from nine to 11 and although Martin Hynes did well to win twice for North Hill, Roy Stubbs, Ian Westaway and Ian Edwards all kept their nerve at different times to get through.
